Dialogue with Modernism
LOCATION. prague, czech republic
GROSS FLOOR AREA. 85sqm
YEAR. 2024
A complete apartment renovation in Prague’s Libeň district, inspired by the refined aesthetics of 1950s–60s modernism.
The design is guided by a dialogue between rational structure and sensitive atmosphere. By removing unnecessary partitions, the layout was simplified to achieve a clear functional hierarchy and spatial continuity. Proportion, material honesty, and restraint — the key principles of modernist design — define the overall character. A recurring black-and-white grid and circular motifs establish visual rhythm and unity across the interior.
Located in a traditional residential block in Prague’s Libeň, the apartment was reconfigured to meet contemporary living needs. By merging two north-facing rooms, the design achieves a sense of openness and light that belies the original orientation. The layout now features a generous living area with kitchen and dining, complemented by a bedroom, guest room or study, bathroom with both tub and shower, separate WC, and a utility room with wardrobe and laundry. The bathroom, WC, and entrance hall are unified by 100 × 100 mm black-and-white ceramic tiles, laid precisely without cuts to emphasize order and calm geometry. Circular elements — from a large round mirror and design light switches to a cluster of spotlights — appear as subtle connecting motifs.
The material palette balances warmth and precision: restored beech floors, custom oak veneer joinery, green lacquered MDF, and brushed stainless steel detailing give the interior its distinctive, timeless tone. The interior is enriched with restored modernist furniture and classics — including a Halabala armchair, Marcel Breuer’s rattan chairs, and a Louis Poulsen pendant. These pieces bring depth and authenticity without resorting to nostalgia. The result is a restrained, crafted, and enduring interior that bridges modernist tradition with contemporary living.
